Can the UK minimum wage actually sustain a living?

Wednesday saw Gordon Brown announce that the national minimum wage would rise by 3.8% from £5.52 to £5.73 an hour in October. But can this figure actually allow a person to live and by this I mean pay bills, put food on the table and have some left over to get some enjoyment in free time?

Sick of being paid a mediocre wage?
